Beyond Babysitting: Why Childcare Deserves Real Recognition

Childcare continues to be undervalued and not only financially.

As professionals in this sector, we are expected to:
• support early education
• nurture emotional and social development
• ensure safety and wellbeing
• build strong relationships with parents
• respond to each child’s individual needs

Yet, despite this level of responsibility, the perception of “just babysitting” still exists.

From my experience in leading a childcare centre, I can confidently say that this profession requires a high level of skill, patience, and commitment.

The impact goes far beyond the setting itself.

Quality childcare:
• supports working families
• contributes to children’s long-term development
• plays a key role in the wider economy

It is time for a shift in how we view and value this sector,  across society, workplaces, and policy.

If we want better outcomes for children, we must start by recognising the importance of those who care for them.
