Moving to a new class or starting kindergarten is an exciting milestone, but for a young child, even a positive change can feel a little overwhelming. A new classroom, new routines, new teachers and new expectations can take time to get used to. The good news is that there are simple ways parents can help make the transition smoother.
Start talking about the new class or kindergarten before the change happens. Keep the conversation positive and simple: “You’re going to have a new classroom where you can learn, play and make new friends.”
Children feel more secure when they know what to expect. Try to keep regular routines around. A predictable routine can help children feel more confident when everything else is changing.
Your child might be excited one day and nervous the next, and that’s completely normal. Listen to their worries without making them bigger. You can say: “It’s okay to feel nervous. I’ll be there to help you.” Give them time to adjust rather than expecting them to feel comfortable immediately.
A new class or kindergarten often comes with new responsibilities. Encourage your child to practise small everyday skills. These little skills can make a big difference to their confidence.
At drop-off, keep your goodbye warm, calm and confident. A simple: “Have a lovely day. I’ll see you later!” can be more reassuring than a long goodbye. Children often take their emotional cues from us. When we show confidence in the transition, we help them feel that they can manage it too.
Some children settle into a new environment quickly. Others need more time. There is no “right” amount of time for a child to adjust.
At St. Paul’s Childcare, we understand that transitions are an important part of a child’s development. With patience, familiar routines and support from the adults around them, children can gradually build the confidence they need for their next big step.
